This remodel and addition took the hint of existing ’40s and ’50s detailing and ran with it. A seamless addition augmented existing space to give this busy family of five a gracious kitchen equipped with a study desk for homework and a much-needed mudroom. The open, light-filled kitchen is now the real center of their day-to-day lives. Curved cabinets and half walls play up existing period details found on the main level fireplace and front door. The scalloping detail pulls from ’50s trim found in the wood-paneled basement, and the racetrack ceiling detail completes the streamlined aesthetic. This bright, updated rambler provides the parents, three energetic kids, and one lovable dog a solid base for liftoff into their full lives. Architect: Rehkamp Larson Architects
