This house was transformed without adding a square foot of new space – it all happened inside the box. Upon considering how to best utilize existing space, the owners prioritized the two most essential rooms in a family home – the kitchen and mudroom. One of the two living spaces on the main floor was happily sacrificed to become a modern kitchen, and a new mudroom and workstation take the place of the old, cramped kitchen. The table, kitchen island, and new windows at the sink center around an existing bay window. The geometric marble backsplash tile, set against a simple palette of white and stainless steel, steals the show. This dramatic change in layout connects front to back and reenergizes the way the house lives. Architect: Rehkamp Larson Architects
