In this Seattle neighborhood of Leschi, we remodeled the kitchen to meet the needs of a family who enjoy cooking and eating meals together, and also required space to share their love of food with their friends. The original kitchen blocked the lake view and movement through the main level. Its materials were worn, and also did not fit aesthetically with the rest of the home. Its space plan was awkward and made it challenging to prepare meals and entertain. To remedy this, we changed the relationship of the kitchen to the dining room with an arched opening, moved the range and sink to the corners, relocated the refrigerator and pantry station, and added an island for seating and food preparation. The new warm colors reflect the owners’ style and integrate with the rest of the main level.
