The apartment is a duplex penthouse in a downtown Chicago mid-rise. The entire apartment was gutted. The objectives of the kitchen remodel were to create eat-in space, the ablility to close off the kitchen from the living/dining, disguise the structural column in the middle of the kitchen and upgrade the appliances and finishes.
Ceiling height walnut and 3 Form paned pocket doors were installed to close off the kichen as needed, with the added benefit of creating an intersting architectural element. Room was created for an expanded pantry and dining nook by utilizing the space under the stairs. The most creative improvement was the construction of a walnut media/bar cabiniet and island surrounding the column, which completely hides it.
Upgraded finishes include absolute black granite countertops, handmade ceramic tile backsplash and a combination of custom painted cabinetry and walnut open shelving. High end stainless appliances complete the look. The result is an extemely workable and eye catching kitchen.
