My wife and I used designed this house one weekend in early 2015, obtained a building permit and started building on May 18, 2015. We did most of the work between the two of us and twelve months later to the day we finished!
The house is modest in size yet spacious enough to meet our needs with features like:
- Site-built brackets
- Site-built garage doors
- Site-built cabinetry and doors
- Island harvested and milled cedar
- Closed-cell spray-foam insulation (AHC50 = 1.13) & 7-in thick walls
- Broan HRV system
- Valor propane fireplace
- Non-toxic paints, stains and varnish
- Pine floors & ceiling
- Solid wood casings & trim
- Marvin Integrity Wood-Ultrex windows & doors
- Nest smoke & CO alarms
We hired help for:
- Site work & foundation
- Spray-foam insulation
- Drywall
- Roof shingles
We used SketchUp to model the house and prepare a set of plans for printing, which worked great. The house lives on three acres. The work was challenging at times but ultimately rewarding. Working together was enjoyable and awesome!
