I use a 30″ shooter board to cross cut shelving and the like (material too wide for a mitre saw, too unwieldy for the table saw.) It can be difficult to clamp down without the clamps getting in the way. I bought some rubber shelf liner and put a square of that under the shooter board. With a little downward pressure from my free hand it holds it perfectly in place, even on melamine.
