Maybe someone has solved this problem this way before, but in case it didn’t occur to you in the natural course of events, here it is: You just ran out of electrical shims, you know, the green thingies that fold up on themselves. The inspector is coming to check out the rental unit, and there isn’t time to go to the store. You rummage in the bottom of your electrical box, pull out the wire nuts that came with some light fixture, the kind you never use–until now. Look at the distance between the box and the wall surface; give a big snip with your lineman’s pliers, and voila! A poifect shim, every time.
