A custom getaway house promises a comfortable environment and few maintenance requirements.
Todd Del Gadio built this custom spec home for a NYC buyer looking for a high-performing, low-maintenance weekend retreat. The aesthetic goal for the 1590-sq.-ft. house was rustic/contemporary. To that end, Gadio used locally harvested and milled hickory floors, pine beams, and siding. Organization is around the 9-1/2-ft.-long walnut kitchen island. The exterior walls are double-framed 2×4 construction with a thermal break to create an R-value of 38; the roof system has an R-value of 60. Rockwool insulation was used throughout. The assembly keeps the house at a steady temperature 365 days a year. All interior walls and floors are also insulated for sound. A 592-sq.-ft. cedar deck overlooks four acres and the builder worked with the existing landscape’s abundant natural stone to create a hardscape that focuses attention on the custom-crafted fire pit and stone seating array.
