Fifth-generation painter Miquel McCarley of Tyger Lily Designs & Interiors spent her summers working for her family’s painting company. After getting married, having children, and spending a few years as a stay-at-home mom, she missed the creativity that painting brought her.
“I loved the idea of owning my own company when I got older, and I loved the process of everything that we did,” Miquel said, but she didn’t want to just go into it for the money. She was passionate about finding creative projects that would make her look forward to each day.
“We had a vision that we were only going to do jobs that lit us up; that we were only going to do jobs that we could be creative and that we loved. We weren’t just going to do jobs that we didn’t have an interest in, and it just exploded. We’ve never not been busy since we started.”
On this project, the Tyger Lily team was working on a new-construction build where the homeower had lived for a couple of years because they didn’t want to choose paint colors before living in the space. A neutral white alabaster was originally chosen for the walls and now it was time to add color.
Miquel speaks about thorough prep in order to get a perfect paint job. The team begins by covering floors and furniture, making sure that everything that isn’t getting painted will be protected.
Because this home is newer, there wasn’t much to fill or repair, so they were able to start by giving the walls a light sanding before going in with color.
On this job, the team painted an office space and a front room, which included a brick fireplace that received a fresh coat of paint. When touching up the paint on the brick, Miquel worked into the grout lines with a brush first before going over the face of the brick.
Tyger Lily uses Benjamin Moore’s Regal Select on a lot of their projects for its even coverage, sheen, and smooth application. It provides a durable finish that is scuff-resistant and easy to wash, perfect for homeowners with kids and pets.
“When we started our business, we were completely invested in Benjamin Moore paint. The other companies I worked for before always used contractor grade and we hated it. When we started using Benjamin Moore, we loved how smooth it is, how the application is so much better, the coverage is better,” Miquel said.
“The end result is just absolutely better than other contractor-grade paints.”
