Seasoned painting contractor Jim Lacey built his family’s saltbox reproduction house and takes pride in doing regular maintenance to keep the house looking great, including painting the exterior every five or so years.
In this video, Jim talks about the challenges posed by tough New England weather conditions during the exterior painting season and how Benjamin Moore’s Element Guard® takes the spot as a specially designed solution capable of withstanding hard elements.
Here’s the transcript:
This house means a lot. I have a wife and two kids, and both kids were raised at this very spot. The style of this house is a saltbox reproduction. We were looking to build something that was authentic, that looked like it was perhaps 200 years old.
My name is Jim Lacey. I’ve been a painting contractor for 30 years. Painting your own house is interesting because there is a sense of pride. We started off with a real good power washing, a good cleaning, and then we’ve identified a few areas around the house where we had to replace some wood because we found some rot, and we took our time with that to make sure we got it all.
For primer, we’re using Benjamin Moore Fresh Start® Primer. It’s a perfect primer for nonbleeding woods, and it’s a perfect primer for our top coat, Element Guard®. On the clapboards, we’ll use a 3- to 4-in. brush. On the window sashes, we actually have 12-over-12 sashes, so it’s a little bit challenging. We’ll use a smaller brush with a narrow profile, which allows us to cut in a lot easier and keep the paint off the glass.
Exterior season is very difficult because we’re in the middle of a real tropical season in July where we’ve had a lot of thunderstorms, a lot of rain, and it’s been hot and humid. Element Guard’s specifically designed to be used in difficult weather conditions. It sets up really well. You won’t have as many worries as you would with other products. It also extends the season so you can paint in colder temperatures in both the fall and the spring.
I’ve been using Benjamin Moore products for 30 years. It’s a consistent paint that has a great name, it’s a very easy product to work with across the board, and they’re very innovative in changing the formulas and keeping up with modern-day painting techniques.
