Final Slab Grading and Prep
The earth inside the footings got a final grading, compacting and layer of crushed stone.
Capillary Break Coating
Applying a waterproof coating to the top of the footing blocks groundwater from wicking into the foundation walls, thereby keeping the basement drier.
Dual-Purpose Sub-Slab Pipe
In this foundation build, a sub-slab perforated pipe and layer of crushed stone will help drain away groundwater and provide an exit pathway for radon gas.
Placing Concrete in the Footings

Pipe Stubs Through Footing
A radon riser pipe and sleeve for the sub-slab drain must be placed before concrete is poured in the footing forms.
A Solid, Well-Insulated Foundation
Insulated concrete forms (ICFs) provide integral foam insulation at the base of a house.
ICFs Often Require a Lot of Steel Reinforcing
The steel reinforcing rod used in the footings and foundation will end up costing about 50% of the cost of the concrete used to fill the footing and ICF forms.
Forming Footings from Recycled Lumber
Recycled I joists, old staging planks and salvaged plywood are used for form boards.
