Install a Stair Rail Series: Installing a Guardrail and Baluster Assembly
See how to remove an old railing and reconstruct it, reusing using existing parts when possible
Installing a balcony guardrail at the proper height with the proper baluster spacing is crucial. Not surprisingly, the previous carpenter completely bungled this aspect by setting the guardrail an inch too low and spacing the balusters too far apart. If this had been in a code jurisdiction, it would not have passed the inspection.
To fix this, Chris will completely remove the old assembly and build a new assembly that conforms to code, reusing parts where he can.
In this episode, you’ll learn how to establish the proper baluster spacing, install the necessary hardware and trim fillets to secure the balusters and handrail in place, and create a professionally finished look.
