Final Slab Grading and Prep
The earth inside the footings got a final grading, compacting and layer of crushed stone.
With the interior footing drains placed the next step is to grade off the soil inside the footings of the main house and run a 4 in. to 6 in. layer of crushed stone. Mat rolled his mini-excavator into the slab area and knocked down the high spots and filled the low spots.
There wasn’t enough material to complete filling so I ran 3 buckets of gravel from a stockpile at the front of the lot.
After touching up the rough grading by hand with a concrete drag/rake Mat compacted the entire area. While my compactor is good for 6 in. lifts, his can compact 24 in. deep – more than enough to pack the grade.
I bailed buckets of crushed stone into the basement with my old backhoe while Mat spread the stone with a grading bucket. Another round of hand raking and a final run with my compactor left a tight surface <1 in. of level throughout.
