FHB House Video: The Building Envelope
To build this resilient, durable, high-performance house, the team began with a unique foundation and a framing plan optimized for insulation.
The second 2018 FHB House video installment looks at the building envelope: the foundation, the framing, the air barrier, and the insulation. We describe more about the unique foundation system, in which an elevated slab appears to cantilever off a small basement. This combination of a traditional poured foundation and a steel pan deck and concrete slab (borrowed from the world of commercial construction) creates one of the signature features of this modern house. Atop this foundation is a wood-framed house with engineered lumber specified in particular areas. We look at these details in the framing design to see how they support the highly insulated, air-sealed envelope that should bring this house beyond net zero.
