The 2018 FHB House is a net-zero energy, high-performance home in California’s Sierra Nevada foothills designed to meet the goals of the California 2020 initiative and comply with the most progressive energy code in the country. The project combines a very tight, well-insulated envelope, cutting-edge mechanical systems, and unique material choices, all wrapped up in a one-of-a-kind modern design.

Subfloor Sheathing
AdvanTech subfloor stands up to the rain until the house is dried in.
On this build, we used AdvanTech subfloor, which has proven itself to me in the past when exposed to months of rain without buckling. New this time was AdvanTech’s adhesive, which we all love. Applied with their long-nosed foam gun, you can easily butter the tops of the joists without bending over. The days of oozing tubes of adhesive messing up hoses, cords, and hands are over.
As the last Trus Joists are put in place, the AdvanTech is staged to sheath the second floor.
The 28-in. nozzle for the Advantech subfloor adhesive means less bending over, and the Teflon-coated nozzle means it’s easy to keep clean. The polyurethane adhesive goes on as a foam and then settles into a gel.
With the AdvanTech subfloor complete, the crew can start framing the walls for the second story.
When the second floor and the roof are done, the crew frames the first floor, which has to be insulated as it’s framed. The AdvanTech is glued and nailed.
