Dealing With Fireplaces and Energy Efficiency
See how the team at the Connecticut Fine Homebuilding House addressed existing fireplaces in order to meet Passive House standards.
Senior editor Patrick McCombe joins architect Elizabeth DiSlavo and builder Albert Jensen-Moulton at the 2020 Fine Homebuilding House to discuss the big changes they’re making in order to break the thermal bridges created by two old stone fireplaces. High-performance homes are often too well-insulated to have any wood-burning heat source, but fortunately the build team will be able to save one beautiful stone chimney by isolating it from the inside of the house with insulation and adding a special Passive House–certified sealed fireplace insert.
